It’s been a tumultuous week for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, better known as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

I couldn’t think of a bigger shock to the British royal family than to hear that two of its most popular members want out.

People are comparing their efforts to distance themselves with King Edward VIII’s abdication, although I think that’s a stretch.

There are many ways to view what Harry and Meghan want to do, which is to have a foot in both the royal and the commercial camps.

Some people think Meghan is being driven out of Britain by racism. Others think Harry bears deep scars from the death of his mother, Diana, and wants no more to do with the monarchy.

My take is through the lens of a business journalist, and someone who’s taken part in a number of entrepreneurial ventures.

I think Harry and Meghan are convinced that there’s money to be had, both for the charity they’re forming, and for themselves.

During their relationship and short marriage, they’ve been elevated to the ranks of the world’s best-known celebrities — David and Victoria Beckham, Jay-Z and Beyonce, Oprah, and the Obamas.
