Why Women Have To Keep Talking — And Talking — About The Harvey Weinsteins
This week, many of my friends and I posted two words to the top of our Facebook pages.
Me, too.
Our male spouses and partners and friends were aghast as they saw one status after another roll by, many from women they said they would never have expected to be harassed.
This week, more celebrities and behind the scenes women have come forward to accuse Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment and assault. Other Hollywood and European figures have been accused of similar harassment, as well.
I have two words for my sisters. Keep talking.
We’re seeing what may be a significant cultural moment here, one that neither Bill Cosby, nor Donald Trump, nor Bill O’Reilly or Roger Ailes managed to trigger, but Harvey Weinstein has.
That is, women coming forward in vast numbers to talk about an unhappy, dismal, even dangerous, shared experience.
I say “may” because I’ve lived through the last 40 years of the women’s movement. I know that just when we let down our guard, old behaviors can return, and rampantly so.
